AIV Wellenstein Lecture 2022: Universal Human Rights in a Changing Global Order: Refocusing the Narrative
On the 1st of November 2022, Professor Gareth Evans, former Foreign Minister of Australia and President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group, delivered the second AIV-Wellenstein lecture, entitled Universal Human Rights in a Changing Global Order: Refocusing the Narrative.
Professor Evans, a key architect of the principle of the ‘responsibility to protect’ against mass atrocity crimes, discussed the importance, in the present desolate international environment, of a common, consistent, principled narrative being embraced by all those – in or out of government – engaged in human rights analysis, advocacy, and activism. He identified eight core principles of action, arguing that powerful ideas – like the universality and indivisibility of human rights – are not a substitute for effective action, but an indispensable foundation for it.
