The European Court of Human Rights: Protector of Civil Rights and Liberties
The European Court of Human Rights plays a vital role in safeguarding respect for human rights in all the member states of the Council of Europe. The governments of member states, including the Netherlands, must ensure that the European Court of Human Rights is able to independently arrive at a conclusion on individual applications to the Court. Support for proposals to restrict access to the Court is unwarranted. In the AIV’s view, further research is called for into the causes of the relatively high number of requests for interim measures against the Netherlands.
