Bridging the Gap Between Citizens and Brussels: Towards Greater Legitimacy and Effectiveness for the European Union

The AIV would like to see the position of the European Commission strengthened. Too often at present, it is the governments of the EU member states that hold the reins. In time there should be a central role for the European Commission, which should once again have a legislative function, in collaboration with the European Parliament, which should consist of a ‘Chamber of States’ and a ‘Peoples’ Chamber’.
